Finals Day Report

Finals day started with the Veterans singles where Chris Graham took on Geoff McKinney. Chris started well and led 12-1 after 8 ends. Geoff finally got started and the score was 12-5 after 11 ends. Chris responded to lead 17-7 at 15 ends, but Geoff managed to get on terms at 18-18 after 21 ends. Chris lifted a single, but Geoff then picked up 3 to win the game 21-19.

The Handicap started next and saw Mansel Montgomery give Freddie Hempton a 7 shot head start. Mansel got on terms at 9-9 after 7 ends and the game remained tight at 12-12 after 12 ends. Freddie managed to open up a lead of 17-12 after 16 before Mansel pulled back to trail 17-16 after 18 ends. Freddie lifted a 1 and then 3 to win his first ever club title 21-16 after 20 ends.

The 3 set started later than planned and had Alan Montgomery face Jim Savage. Al started brilliantly to lift a 4 in the first end. Jim fought back and made Al play some great shots to win the first set 8-6 after 7 ends. The second set was tight until Al lifted a 4 in the 4th end. From then on Jim was up against it, but it took Al the full 7 ends to win the second set 8-5. Overall both won 7 ends, but the difference was a four in each set for Al.

Heavy rain delayed the playing of the finals seheduled for 2pm until 2.30pm.

In the Open Singles Davy McAleese was seeking revenge on Alan Montgomery in a replay of last year's final. Al didn't let the rain delay put him off and opened up a 9-1 lead after 5 ends. Davy responded well and played some great shots to trail 10-7 at 10 ends. Al always managed to keep his nose in front and led 16-10 at 15 ends. Al then finished the game in style lifting back to back threes to retain his Singles title.

The Pairs final was contested by Geoff McKinney/Mansel Montgomery and Ronnie Millar/Derek Brown. Mansel didn't let his earlier disappointment in the Handicap affect him as he and Geoff jumped out to a 9-2 lead after 4 ends. Ronnie and Derek won the next 2 ends to trail 9-6, but a 5 in the fifth end saw Geoff and Mansel lead 15-7 after 10 ends. It was always going to be difficult for Ronnie and Derek and so it proved as Geoff and Mansel lifted a 2 and 4 to end the game 21-8 after 13 ends.

In the ladies Betty Dornan beat Liz Caldwell in the 4 bowl singles while Elizabeth Cameron beat the unfortunate Liz Caldwell in the 2 bowl singles. Liz Caldwell paired with Elizabeth Cameron defeated Joanne Morrow and Betty Dornan, while Joanne Morrow defeated Marlene Hempton in the Novice singles.

Congratulations to all finalists on making it there and especially to all the winners.
